Odisha Darshan: Berhampur – Top 5 Places to Visit

When we think about travelling or planning a vacation, we usually imagine popular destinations such as Kerala, Rajasthan, Shimla, or Ladakh, or international places like Maldives, Bali, Switzerland, Paris, London, or the United States. But in the process, we often overlook the fact that Odisha is home to many beautiful and scenic destinations spread across its districts that remain largely unexplored.

Through Odisha Darshan, we will travel across different districts of Odisha and discover the hidden beauty, culture, and heritage that the state has to offer. From serene beaches and ancient temples to hills, lakes, and vibrant local traditions, Odisha holds countless treasures waiting to be explored.

Why Should you Visit Berhampur ?

If you’re traveling through Odisha and want to experience a place where the air smells of salty sea breezes and the markets hum with the rhythm of ancient looms, look no further than Berhampur.

Nestled in the southern heart of the state near the Andhra border, the "Silk City" is more than just a commercial hub—it’s a vibrant tapestry of Odia heritage, South Indian flavors, and coastal tranquility. Here is everything you need to know for your next adventure to this southern gem.

Top Places you Must Visit

  1. Tara Tarini Temple:   Perched majestically on a hill 30 km from the city, this is one of India’s most revered Shakti Peethas. The view of the Rushikulya River winding below is worth the climb alone.

2. Gopalpur Beach: Just 12 km away, this former colonial port is now a peaceful retreat. Don't miss the historic lighthouse and the fresh seafood stalls.

5. Siddha Bhairavi Temple:

A spiritual cornerstone for the region, located about 18 km from the city center, offering a deep dive into local religious traditions. The temple complex features 108 sub-shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, including the 12 Jyotirlingas, Vaishno Devi, Dashavatara, Venkateswara, Ranganatha, Meenakshi, and Badrinath. A major shrine is also dedicated to Lord Jagannath along with Balabhadra and Subhadra. Local belief holds that Goddess Bhairavi will accompany Kalki Avatar at the end of Kali Yuga to restore Dharma.

6. BalaKumari Temple:

Maa Balakumari Temple is a popular pilgrimage and tourist destination in Odisha, located on a hill near Chikiti in Ganjam district. The temple, founded by the royal family of Chikiti, is dedicated to Goddess Balakumari, a form of Goddess Durga, who is widely worshipped in the region. Devotees climb around 300 plus steps to reach the hilltop temple, which attracts pilgrims and visitors from across southern Odisha.
