How IPL Is Beaking Records and Challenging Global Sports Giants — Can It Beat Football and Basketball Leagues?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has reached a historic milestone with two landmark franchise deals that underline its growing dominance in the global sports economy. A consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group, The Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures and Blackstone has acquired the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for $1.78 billion (₹14,800 crore) — the highest valuation ever for an IPL franchise.

Shortly after, a consortium led by Kal Somani agreed to buy the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for $1.63 billion (₹13,500 crore). These back-to-back deals highlight how IPL franchises are rapidly transforming into global sports assets.

Global Investors Enter IPL

The RR deal is backed by prominent global investors, including:

  • Rob Walton — owner of the Denver Broncos (NFL)(purchased for $4.65 billion / ₹38,500 crore)

  • Sheila Ford Hamp — chairwoman of the Detroit Lions(NFL)

This signals a strong trend: billionaire investors who dominate American sports are now entering cricket.

IPL Franchise Valuations vs Global Teams

While IPL franchises have crossed the billion-dollar mark, they still trail the very top global teams — but the gap is closing fast.

Top Global Team Valuations (2026)

  • Dallas Cowboys (American Football)→ $13B (₹1.08 lakh crore)
  • Golden State Warriors (American Football)$11B (₹91,000 crore)
  • Los Angeles Lakers (Basketball)→ $10B (₹83,000 crore)
  • Los Angeles Rams (Basketball) → $10.5B (₹87,000 crore)

But IPL teams have achieved this scale in just 15–18 years, far faster than traditional leagues

Comparing Major Team Sales Globally

Some of the biggest franchise sales in recent years:

  • Boston Celtics (Basketball)→ $6.1B (₹50,500 crore)
  • Washington Commanders(American Football) → $6.05B (₹50,000 crore)
  • Chelsea FC (Football) → $5.3B (₹44,000 crore)
  • Denver Broncos(American Football) → $4.65B (₹38,500 crore)
  • Milwaukee Bucks (Basketball)→ $3.5B (₹29,000 crore)

RCB and RR are now comparable to mid-tier NBA and MLB teams. They are entering the global top-tier sports investment category.

League-Level Comparison: IPL vs Global Giants

  • National Football League(NFL) → $19.2B annual revenue (₹1.6 lakh crore)

  • National Basketball Association(NBA) → ~$10B revenue (₹83,000 crore)

  • UEFA Champions League → ~€3.5B (~₹31,000 crore)

  • Indian Premere League → ~$1.21B revenue (₹10,000 crore)

IPL is already close to NFL-level ecosystem value, despite being a much younger league.

Comparison with Other Cricket Leagues

A comparison of global cricket league valuations clearly highlights the overwhelming dominance of the Indian Premier League.

League

Value (USD)

Value (INR approx)

IPL

$18.5 Billion

₹1.53 lakh crore

WPL

$1.5 Billion

₹12,400 crore

ILT20 (UAE)

$160 Million

₹1,300 crore

SA20

$145 Million

₹1,200 crore

BBL (Australia)

$10 Million

₹83 crore

PSL

$5.7 Million

₹47 crore

MLC (USA)

$6.9 Million

₹57 crore

The valuation gap is striking. The IPL, with an estimated business value of $18.5 billion (₹1.53 lakh crore), stands far ahead of every other cricket league in the world.

Even the second-largest competition, the Women’s Premier League (WPL), is nearly 12 times smaller, while leagues such as ILT20 and SA20 operate at valuations below $200 million. Traditional tournaments like the Big Bash League (BBL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) remain significantly smaller in comparison.

In practical terms, the IPL is approximately 10 to 100 times larger than other cricket leagues globally. This massive gap is driven by India’s vast market size, lucrative media rights deals, and strong franchise-based commercial model.

As a result, the IPL has firmly established itself not just as the premier cricket league, but as a global sports powerhouse competing with the biggest leagues in the world.

Why IPL Valuations Are Rising So Fast

1. Massive Market Size:- India’s 1.4 billion population creates unmatched audience scale

2. Media Rights Boom:- IPL broadcasting rights have crossed $6+ billion (₹50,000 crore)

3. Global Capital Inflow:- Entry of private equity firms and US billionaires

4. Franchise Stability:-

  • Revenue sharing model

  • Salary caps

  • Centralized governance

Bright Future Ahead

Despite being a short-duration tournament of just around two months, the Indian Premier League has rapidly emerged as a serious competitor to some of the richest and most popular global leagues like the National Football League, National Basketball Association, and English Premier League.

Its ability to generate massive revenues, attract global audiences, and deliver high quality entertainment in a compressed time frame has set it apart in the global sports ecosystem. With increasing investments from some of the world’s wealthiest sports franchise owners, the IPL is no longer just a cricket league—it is becoming a global sports business powerhouse.

Looking ahead, the IPL is well-positioned to break into the top three richest sports leagues globally, and current trends strongly suggest that its growth trajectory will only accelerate. The future of the league appears exceptionally bright, backed by strong financial momentum and expanding global interest.
