BJP Seal on Election Commission Letter Sparks Controversy; Congress Questions Credibility

A controversy has started after an Election Commission document was found carrying the seal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This created confusion among people and raised questions about the neutrality of the Election Commission of India.
The issue quickly spread on social media and was reported by several Malayalam news channels.
CEO Kerala Gives Clarification
The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Kerala, said the incident was a clerical error.
The BJP Kerala unit recently approached the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office seeking clarification on the 2019 guidelines related to the publication of criminal antecedents of candidates.
Along with their request, the party submitted a photocopy of the original 2019 guidelines. The specific copy provided by them already carried the party’s seal.
The office did not notice the party symbol and shared the document with other political parties by mistake.
The mistake was later identified and corrected. On March 21, the office withdrew the wrong document and informed all political parties and election officials.
The CEO also asked the public and media not to spread misleading information and said that the Election Commission follows strict systems to ensure fair elections.

Congress Reacts Strongly
The Congress party strongly criticised the incident and said it is not just a small mistake.
In a post on X, Congress said, “A BJP seal on an Election Commission letter is a serious red flag.”
The party said that an official letter carrying a political party’s seal raises serious doubts about the Election Commission’s neutrality and credibility.
Congress also asked several questions:
- Why did a political party’s seal appear on an official EC document?
- Who is responsible for this mistake?
- Can the Election Commission explain this to the people of India?
Background
The document is related to 2019 Election Commission guidelines based on a Supreme Court order. These rules require candidates to declare their criminal records and inform the public.
Bigger Issue
Even though officials have called it a simple error, the incident has triggered a larger debate about trust and transparency.
Opposition parties have often raised questions about EVMs and alleged bias in the Election Commission after losing elections. This incident has added fuel to those concerns.
It has given fresh ground to question the credibility and neutrality of the Election Commission of India.
The controversy shows how even a small mistake can create serious doubts when it involves key democratic institutions.
