Salary Cut for Neglecting Parents: Telangana Govt Considers New Proposal

Hyderabad: The Telangana government, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, is set to discuss a proposal to deduct 10% to 15% salary from government employees who fail to take care of their elderly parents.
The proposal will be taken up in the state cabinet meeting on March 23, as part of efforts to strengthen support systems for senior citizens.
Key Proposal
According to officials, if a complaint by parents is verified:
- A portion of the employee’s salary will be directly transferred to the parents
- Departments will appoint officers to handle such cases
- The deduction may continue regularly to ensure consistent support
Focus on Elderly Welfare
The move is part of the state’s “Pranaam” initiative, aimed at improving the welfare of senior citizens.
The government has already set up multiple day-care centres providing food, healthcare, and social support to elderly people, especially those living alone.
Reason Behind the Move
Officials say there has been a rise in cases where elderly parents are neglected, even by children in stable government jobs. The proposal aims to introduce accountability along with existing legal provisions.
Other Issues on Agenda
The cabinet is also expected to discuss:
- Representation of transgender persons in municipal bodies
- Employee welfare and salary-related matters
- Possible merger of the state transport corporation
What Next
If approved, the bill may be introduced and passed during the ongoing budget session. Telangana could become one of the first states to directly link government salaries with parental care responsibilities.
The proposal highlights a growing concern over elderly welfare and signals a stricter approach by the state to address the issue.
