Modi, Xi Reaffirm Partnership at SCO Summit in Tianjin

Modi & Xi held bilateral meetings

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a significant bilateral meeting on Sunday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, where both leaders underscored their shared vision of advancing India-China relations on the foundation of mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity.

Welcoming the positive momentum in ties since their last engagement in Kazan in October 2024, the two leaders emphasized that India and China must be viewed as “development partners, not rivals.” Both stressed that differences should not escalate into disputes and highlighted the importance of peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) as a prerequisite for sustained progress in bilateral cooperation.

A key focus of the meeting was the boundary issue, which has historically strained ties between the two Asian giants. Modi and Xi reaffirmed their support for a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution, guided by the broader political perspective of bilateral ties rather than short-term friction. They acknowledged the progress achieved by the Special Representatives in recent talks and pledged to continue backing their efforts, noting that the successful disengagement of troops and the maintenance of calm last year had created a conducive environment for dialogue.

On the economic front, both leaders recognized the need to further expand trade and investment while addressing concerns over the persistent trade imbalance. China remains one of India’s largest trading partners, but the deficit continues to be a matter of concern for New Delhi. Modi and Xi agreed on the importance of balancing trade flows and creating opportunities for businesses in both countries. The two sides also discussed strengthening connectivity through more direct flights, streamlined visa procedures, and cultural initiatives. The resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra was hailed as a positive step in reviving people-to-people exchanges, and both leaders expressed commitment to expand such initiatives.

The meeting also touched upon regional and global issues where India and China share common interests. Modi highlighted that both nations pursue strategic autonomy and that their bilateral relationship should not be judged through the prism of third countries. The leaders agreed on the importance of cooperating on global challenges such as combating terrorism and ensuring fairness and equity in multilateral trade platforms.

In a gesture of goodwill, Modi expressed India’s support for China’s SCO Presidency and appreciated the organization of the Tianjin Summit. He extended an invitation to Xi to attend the BRICS Summit that India will host in 2026. Xi thanked Modi for the invitation and assured support for India’s BRICS Presidency, signaling continuity in multilateral engagement.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi also met Cai Qi, Member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China. During their interaction, Modi reiterated his vision of deepening India-China ties and sought Beijing’s support in implementing the consensus reached at the leaders’ level. Cai reaffirmed China’s readiness to enhance exchanges and cooperation in various fields.

The Tianjin meeting marks an important step in recalibrating India-China ties after years of friction and border tensions. By focusing on stability, cooperation, and balanced growth, the Modi-Xi dialogue signals cautious optimism for the future of bilateral relations in Asia’s most consequential partnership.
