Trump Warns Of US Action On Greenland; Denmark Puts Military On Alert

Washington: US President Donald Trump has triggered international concern after saying the United States would take action on Greenland, even if the island’s authorities oppose it.

What Trump Said, and Where

Trump made the remarks on January 9, 2026, during a meeting at the White House in Washington, D.C., while speaking with industry leaders and senior officials. He said the US would “do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not,” adding that Washington could pursue the issue “the easy way or the hard way.”

While Trump did not announce any immediate military action, his language suggested that the US would not rule out strong measures if its objectives were not met.

Why Trump Said It

Trump said Greenland is of critical strategic importance to US national security. He argued that the Arctic island’s location makes it vulnerable to growing influence from Russia and China, especially as melting ice opens new shipping routes and access to natural resources.

Denmark’s Response

Denmark responded strongly to Trump’s remarks. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that any attempt to change its status by force would be unacceptable.
