TRAI’s Big Move: No More Forced Data Plans, Voice & SMS Packs to Return

In a major relief for mobile users, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed a new rule that could end the practice of forcing customers to buy data plans along with voice services.

Under this proposal, telecom operators will be required to introduce affordable “voice-only” and SMS plans, allowing users to choose services based on their actual needs. If implemented, this move will make it mandatory for companies to offer separate call and SMS packs across all validity periods.

Why This Move Matters

Mobile users across India have been increasingly unhappy with rising recharge costs. Many customers—especially those who only need calling and SMS—have been forced to purchase bundled plans that include data, even when they don’t use it.

To address this issue, TRAI has directed telecom companies to introduce plans without data, ensuring more flexibility and affordability for users. The move aims to:

  • Reduce unnecessary expenses for consumers
  • Provide customized plan options
  • Improve accessibility for non-internet users

Who Will Benefit the Most

This proposal is expected to bring significant relief to:

  • Rural users with limited internet usage
  • Senior citizens who primarily rely on calling
  • Feature phone users who don’t need data services

For the first time, users may get dedicated voice and SMS plans for 28, 56, and 84 days, similar to existing bundled plans.

Impact on Telecom Companies

Major telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea will need to restructure their offerings.

They will be required to:

  • Provide voice-only alternatives alongside every standard plan
  • Maintain similar validity periods for these plans
  • Ensure affordability and transparency

Currently, voice-only plans are limited and often come with inconvenient validity periods or higher pricing.

What Happens Next

TRAI has asked telecom companies to submit their response to the proposal by April 28. Once approved and implemented, the new rule will:

  • End forced data bundling
  • Introduce cheaper recharge options
  • Give users greater control over their mobile expenses

If enforced, this decision could mark a major shift in India’s telecom sector, putting consumer choice first. Millions of users will finally be able to pay only for what they use—without being burdened by unwanted data plans.
