Iran War effect: Plastic Prices Surge, Hospital Equipment May Get Costlier

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has begun to affect everyday life in India, with rising plastic prices expected to make daily essentials and medical supplies more expensive in the coming weeks.
Why Prices Are Rising
The disruption near the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route, has pushed crude oil prices sharply higher. Since plastics are made from oil-based materials, the cost of raw materials has surged by up to 50–60% in a short period.
Major Indian producers such as IOCL, Reliance and GAIL have already increased prices of key plastic materials, including polypropylene, polyethylene and PVC. Industry sources say the hikes have gone up to ₹13,000 per tonne, with some categories seeing even higher cumulative increases this month.
Effect on Daily Items
The impact is likely to be visible soon in daily-use items. Packaged goods like milk, edible oil and snacks may either become costlier or reduce in quantity. Household plastic products such as buckets, mugs and containers are also expected to see price increases of 10–20% from April.
Hospitals Might Face problem
The healthcare sector is facing added pressure. Hospitals are reporting early signs of shortage in items like nitrile gloves, while the cost of syringes and IV sets has risen significantly. Experts warn that if the trend continues, treatment costs could also increase.
Small and medium plastic manufacturers, which form a large part of the industry, are struggling with rising input costs. Many have already cut production, raising concerns about supply shortages in the near future.
If geopolitical tensions persist, consumers across India are likely to face higher prices on a wide range of essential goods in the coming weeks.
