Election Ads Under Watch: EC Makes Approval Compulsory

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has mandated that all political parties must obtain prior approval before publishing or broadcasting any election-related advertisements.

With assembly elections scheduled in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry, the Commission has reinforced strict compliance rules to ensure fair campaigning.

Key Guidelines Issued

  • Political parties must seek approval from the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) before releasing any advertisement.

  • This applies across print media, television, radio, and social media platforms.

  • The directive is also applicable to assembly by-elections.

Warning on Paid News

The EC has warned that strict action will be taken if any political party is found involved in “paid news” — the practice of publishing favourable content in exchange for money.

Mandatory Social Media Disclosure

Candidates are required to submit complete details of their social media accounts while filing their election affidavits, ensuring transparency in online campaigning.

Expenditure Disclosure Rule

Under the Representation of the People Act, 1951:

  • Political parties must disclose total election expenditure

  • The details must be published on their official websites

  • Deadline: within 75 days after the conclusion of elections

Focus on Transparency

The Election Commission’s directions aim to:

  • Ensure a level playing field

  • Prevent misuse of media platforms

  • Strengthen transparency and accountability in elections

The EC has directed all political parties to strictly follow these rules during the election period.
