Washington: US President Donald Trump has triggered international concern after saying the United States would take action on Greenland, even if the island’s authorities oppose it.
What Trump Said, and Where
Trump made the remarks on January 9, 2026, during a meeting at the White House in Washington, D.C., while speaking with industry leaders and senior officials. He said the US would “do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not,” adding that Washington could pursue the issue “the easy way or the hard way.”
While Trump did not announce any immediate military action, his language suggested that the US would not rule out strong measures if its objectives were not met.
Why Trump Said It
Trump said Greenland is of critical strategic importance to US national security. He argued that the Arctic island’s location makes it vulnerable to growing influence from Russia and China, especially as melting ice opens new shipping routes and access to natural resources.
According to Trump, the US must act to prevent rival powers from gaining a foothold in the Arctic region. Analysts say his comments reflect broader geopolitical competition over Arctic trade routes, rare-earth minerals, and military positioning.
Trump has previously shown interest in expanding US influence over Greenland, reviving debates that date back to his earlier proposals involving closer control or acquisition of the territory.

Denmark’s Response
Denmark responded strongly to Trump’s remarks. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that any attempt to change its status by force would be unacceptable.
We’ll shoot first, talk later: Denmark warns US. She stressed that Greenland’s future can only be decided by Greenlanders themselves, in line with international law. Frederiksen also warned that any military escalation involving Greenland could seriously damage relations within NATO, as both Denmark and the United States are members.
Danish authorities said their military has been instructed to remain vigilant and prepared to protect Danish sovereignty in the Arctic, while emphasizing that Denmark seeks dialogue and de-escalation, not confrontation.
Greenland’s political leaders also rejected Trump’s comments, reiterating that the island is not for sale and that its people alone will determine its future.
There is no confirmation of any imminent US military action. However, Trump’s remarks have heightened diplomatic tensions and renewed global focus on the strategic importance of the Arctic region.
