Jagdeep Dhankhar Resign
Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, officially resigned from his position on Monday, citing health issues and the necessity of following medical advice. His resignation was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu and took immediate effect under Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar wrote, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately.” The 72-year-old leader decided to step down at the start of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, marking the end of his tenure as both Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
During his time in office, Dhankhar often played a pivotal role in the upper house of Parliament, ensuring order and contributing to discussions on significant national issues. Known for his legal background and calm demeanour, he maintained a respectful relationship with members across political parties.
Expressing his deep gratitude in the resignation note, Dhankhar thanked President Droupadi Murmu for her constant support. He said their partnership was marked by mutual respect and a harmonious working dynamic, something he would always value.
He also extended his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers. “The cooperation and support of the Prime Minister have been invaluable,” Dhankhar wrote, adding that his experiences in the Vice President’s office had been a learning journey.
Further, Dhankhar conveyed his heartfelt thanks to Members of Parliament for their warmth and trust. He described his interactions with them as memorable and said he cherished the time spent working together for the nation.
Looking back at his term, Dhankhar said it was an honour to serve during a period of significant change and progress in India. He highlighted the country’s rapid economic growth and rising global influence. “Being part of this transformative era has been a privilege,” he said. “I leave this esteemed office with pride in Bharat’s achievements and complete confidence in her bright future.”
Jagdeep Dhankhar, a seasoned politician and former Governor of West Bengal, assumed office as Vice President in August 2022. His legal career and political experience spanned decades, during which he held various key positions, including as a Member of Parliament and a minister in the central government.
His sudden resignation, especially on the very first day of the Monsoon Session, came as a surprise to many. However, leaders from across party lines have wished him well and praised his contributions during his tenure.
With his departure, the process to elect the next Vice President is expected to begin soon. The Vice President plays a critical role in India’s parliamentary democracy, acting as the presiding officer of the Rajya Sabha and often representing the country in key events and functions.
While the political implications of his resignation are yet to unfold, one thing is clear—Jagdeep Dhankhar leaves behind a legacy marked by dignity, commitment, and an unwavering belief in India’s potential.
His parting message resonates with optimism: “India’s journey ahead is bright, and I remain proud to have contributed in my small way to her progress.”
