Ukraine Conflict is “Modi’s War”, Says Trump Adviser Navarro Amid Tariff Row

Washington: U.S. trade adviser Peter Navarro has controversially described the ongoing Ukraine conflict as “Modi’s war,” arguing that India’s continued purchase of Russian oil is helping fuel Moscow’s military operations.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Navarro — Senior Counsellor for Trade and Manufacturing under President Donald Trump — alleged that India’s actions were prolonging the war. He claimed that American workers, consumers, and taxpayers are paying the price through lost jobs, higher costs, and increased tariffs.

Trump recently slapped an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, raising total U.S. duties on Indian imports to 50%. According to Navarro, these penalties could be rolled back immediately if New Delhi stopped buying Russian crude.

“India can get 25% off tomorrow if it stops buying Russian oil and helping to feed their war machine,” Navarro said.

While calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi “a great leader,” he criticized India’s high tariff regime and oil trade with Russia. Navarro further alleged that Indian refiners purchase Russian oil at a discount and then sell it globally at a premium in cooperation with Russian companies.

India, however, has rejected Washington’s latest trade measures as “unjustified and unreasonable,” asserting that it will take all steps necessary to safeguard its economic interests.

The White House adviser also warned that without cutting off Russian oil purchases by India, China, and Europe, the war would drag on. “Stop buying Russian oil tomorrow, and the war is over,” Navarro said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee criticized Trump’s approach, saying that targeting India with tariffs while ignoring China’s larger imports of Russian oil “hurts Americans and sabotages the U.S.-India relationship.”
