UK wants action against attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

Top politicians from the United Kingdom, including current and former lawmakers, human rights activists, and religious leaders, have called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government to take strong action against the interim regime in Bangladesh. The regime, led by Muhammad Yunus, has been accused of failing to protect religious minorities, especially Hindus.

At a recent seminar held at the UK Parliament’s House of Commons, titled “Bangladesh at Crossroads: Role of International Community and Diaspora”, serious concerns were raised about the ongoing violence in Bangladesh. The event was organised by the Conservative Friends of Bangladesh (CFoB) and led by its Chair, Anjenarra Rahman-Huque. The session was chaired by MP Bob Blackman, who also heads the influential 1922 Committee and serves as the Parliamentary President of CFoB.

Speakers at the event revealed alarming figures, reporting that between August 5 and September 20, 2024, over 2,000 violent incidents targeted Hindus after Muhammad Yunus took charge of the interim government, replacing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Another 174 cases were recorded from late September to December 2024, and 258 more incidents occurred between January and June 2025.

It was also reported that law enforcement, including police and military, have become inactive, failing to respond to the violence. In addition to attacks on minorities, press freedom has suffered. In the past 11 months, 168 journalists had their licenses cancelled and 43 were jailed under the unelected regime.

Haradhan Bhowmik from the United Hindu Alliance UK shared a heartbreaking example. He said that on June 26, a Hindu woman in Cumilla’s Muradnagar was raped by a local politician. The incident was recorded, and the video was shamefully shared on social media. “Hindus are living in fear. They don’t know what will happen the next day,” he said.

The seminar emphasized the need for greater representation of minorities in Bangladesh’s political system. Speakers urged the international community to act quickly to protect human rights and restore democracy and peace in the country.
