Trump Denies WSJ Report
U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply rejected a Wall Street Journal article that alleged Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent tried to dissuade him from firing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, The Hill reported.
Taking to Truth Social on Sunday, Trump dismissed the article as “typically untruthful” and insisted no one had to explain to him the market consequences of firing Powell.
“The Wall Street Journal published a false story today claiming Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned me against firing Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell — the worst Fed Chair in history — due to market concerns,” Trump wrote. “That’s nonsense. I understand the markets better than anyone. If it weren’t for me, the markets wouldn’t be at record highs — they would’ve crashed!”
He added, “People don’t explain things to me. I explain things to them!”
According to The Hill, Trump has long been critical of Powell’s decisions on interest rates and has expressed a desire to remove him. However, legal experts say the president may not have the authority to directly dismiss the Federal Reserve Chair. The news has reportedly raised eyebrows among investors.
The Federal Reserve declined to comment when approached, the report added.
In a separate controversy, Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal over a different article that claimed he sent a birthday greeting to Jeffrey Epstein — the late convicted sex offender. The message, according to the newspaper, was allegedly written inside the outline of a naked woman and signed by Trump. It reportedly read: “A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.”
Trump’s legal team argues the story was entirely fabricated and was designed to damage his reputation. The lawsuit claims that the article has caused significant harm to his image and finances, and seeks billions in damages.
“The defendants created this story to deliberately misrepresent President Trump and damage his character,” the lawsuit says.
