News In Detail: Trump
US President Donald Trump has once again turned up the pressure on Europe, urging leaders to immediately cut off Russian oil imports to stop funding Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters ahead of his upcoming state visit to the United Kingdom, Trump made it clear that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should move toward a settlement with Russia. He argued that Europe’s continued reliance on Russian energy is undermining international sanctions.
“Zelenskyy will have to make a deal, and Europe has to stop buying oil from Russia. They talk about supporting Ukraine, but they keep buying Russian oil. That has to end,” Trump said firmly.
When asked whether he was actively pressuring NATO and European allies to halt imports, Trump didn’t hesitate: “I am. The problem is they’re still buying Russian oil. It’s not fair to us, and it has to stop immediately.”
Trump described the Russia-Ukraine war as a tragedy that should never have broken out, blaming what he called “deep hatred” between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I’ve stopped seven wars in eight months before. This one should have been easy, but it isn’t. Still, we’re going to get it stopped,” he said.
On Monday, Trump had already lashed out at NATO for being slow to act, criticizing European governments for weak sanctions while still purchasing Russian oil and gas. “They’re not doing the job. Europe is my friend, but the sanctions they’ve imposed aren’t strong enough. They keep buying energy from Russia, and that defeats the purpose,” he argued.
He also pointed to European imports of Russian liquefied natural gas, saying, “It doesn’t matter if it’s natural gas, oil, or even cigarettes. They should not be buying from Russia.”
When asked about the possibility of hosting a peace summit, Trump said he was open to it but admitted the hostility between the two sides runs deep. “Whether you call it a summit or just a meeting doesn’t matter. I’ll likely have to step in, but they hate each other so much they can barely talk,” he remarked.
Trump also revealed that he had written to NATO leaders, stating he would only move forward with new sanctions on Russia if all member nations stopped buying Russian energy.
In a surprising twist, he also linked the conflict to trade with China, suggesting NATO could impose steep tariffs. “If NATO places tariffs of 50 to 100 percent on China — with the promise to lift them once the war ends — it would put massive pressure on both Russia and China to help bring this war to an end,” Trump wrote.
