Davos: Addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump said he was happy to be in “beautiful Davos” and to join business leaders from around the world, describing them as friends — and a few enemies.
Speaking about Greenland, Trump described it as “a big, beautiful piece of ice” and claimed that no country other than the United States could properly defend it. He also said it was a mistake to return Greenland after World War II, adding that the US received “ingratitude” in return.

Trump said he had tremendous respect for the people of Greenland and Denmark but again repeated that no other country or group of countries could protect the territory better than the US.

He further stated that Denmark had fallen to Germany within six hours during World War II and said the US had stepped in to help, which he described as a moral obligation.
Trump also recalled how the US established military bases in Greenland for Denmark and said that after the war, the US handed Greenland back to Denmark. He remarked, “How stupid were we to do that? And how ungrateful are they now?”
