Trump Says US-EU Trade Deal Is “100%” Possible After Meeting With Italy’s PM
U.S. President Donald Trump said he is confident that a trade deal between the United States and the European Union (EU) will happen. He made the statement after meeting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House on Thursday.
Trump said, “There will be a trade deal, 100%,” and added that it would be a fair one. This comes as tensions remain high over trade tariffs, including a 20% tariff he had placed on EU imports. That tariff is currently on hold for 90 days.
Even though Trump is known for being tough on trade, he showed some willingness to work things out. He also mentioned that more trade deals with other countries could be coming soon, saying, “Everybody wants to make a deal. And if they don’t, we’ll make the deal for them.”
During their meeting, Trump warmly welcomed Meloni and praised her, calling her “one of the real leaders of the world.” He said the U.S. and Italy have a good relationship. Meloni agreed, saying she believed the U.S. and EU could reach an agreement. She added, “The goal for me is to make the West great again, and I think we can do it together.”
Even though Meloni had criticized Trump’s tariff decision and called it “absolutely wrong,” she still sees the U.S. as an important ally. “If I didn’t consider it a reliable partner, I wouldn’t be here,” she said. Her comments showed she is trying to balance defending European interests while keeping strong ties with the U.S.
The 20% tariff on EU goods is part of a larger plan by Trump to protect U.S. industries. He has also put a general 10% tariff on most goods coming into the country. Trump says these steps are needed because the EU has taken advantage of trade deals, claiming the bloc was “formed to screw the United States.”
