Trump Administration Sues NYC Over Sanctuary Laws Amid Immigration Clash
The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against New York City, claiming the city’s sanctuary policies illegally block federal immigration enforcement. The case was submitted Thursday in a Brooklyn federal court, arguing that city laws interfere with the federal government’s authority to regulate immigration.
Officials say New York’s “sanctuary” rules make it difficult to detain undocumented immigrants, even those accused of serious crimes. The complaint cited a recent case involving two undocumented individuals who allegedly shot a federal customs officer during a robbery attempt in a public park.
The lawsuit targets Mayor Eric Adams, who is up for reelection this November. Adams, who was elected as a Democrat but now plans to run as an independent, has supported revisiting the city’s laws — especially when dealing with violent offenders.
A spokesperson from the mayor’s office said Adams supports the spirit of the laws but has asked the City Council to reconsider some parts to allow better cooperation with federal agents. So far, the Council has declined.
The Department of Justice also criticized the city’s jails for honoring only 4% of federal detainer requests in 2024 — notices asking local authorities to hold individuals for immigration officers.
In recent months, tensions between Trump officials and New York Democrats have grown. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem urged voters to reconsider their leadership, saying Adams “could have done better.” Meanwhile, prominent local Democrats continue to oppose the administration’s aggressive immigration policies.
The case is expected to fuel political debates ahead of both local and national elections.
