Trump vs Musk
Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump on Sunday dismissed Elon Musk’s decision to launch a new political party, calling the move “ridiculous” and a threat to the two-party system. The comments marked the latest clash between the two influential figures, who once shared a close political and professional relationship.
Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, Trump said, “I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party. We’ve had incredible success with the Republican Party. The system was built for two parties — third parties just create confusion.”
Trump’s remarks came a day after Musk officially announced the formation of the “America Party”, which he says will focus on fiscal responsibility and push back against Trump’s recently passed spending bill — a sweeping piece of legislation Musk argues could drive the U.S. into bankruptcy.
From Allies to Adversaries
Once political allies, the relationship between Trump and Musk has deteriorated in recent weeks. Musk was a major donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign and frequently visited the White House. However, the two parted ways over Trump’s latest tax and spending bill — dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill” — which Musk fiercely criticized.
In a Sunday post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote: “What was the point of @DOGE if he’s just going to add $5 trillion in debt?” The comment referred to the now-defunct federal downsizing agency Musk briefly led. He also accused Trump’s bill of removing key green energy incentives that benefit Tesla.
Trump responded on his Truth Social account: “I’m saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely off the rails — he’s become a train wreck over the past five weeks.”
He also claimed Musk’s criticism stems from the bill ending green energy credits that Tesla relied on, and hinted at possibly ending federal contracts and subsidies for Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX.
NASA Nominee Withdrawal Sparks Questions
Trump also addressed his decision to withdraw the nomination of Jared Isaacman — a close Musk associate and billionaire private astronaut — as NASA administrator. Trump confirmed on Sunday that he pulled the nomination in May because of Isaacman’s ties to Musk and past donations to Democratic politicians.
“I thought it was inappropriate to have someone so close to Elon, who is heavily involved in the space industry, run NASA,” Trump said. “My number one priority is to protect the American public.”
Backlash in the Business World
The fallout from Musk’s new political ambitions has also spilled into the business world. Azoria Partners, which planned to launch a Tesla-focused ETF this week, postponed its listing. Azoria CEO James Fishback criticized Musk’s decision, urging Tesla’s board to clarify whether his political involvement is compatible with his duties as CEO.
Fishback posted on X: “I encourage the Board to meet immediately and ask Elon to clarify his political ambitions and evaluate whether they are compatible with his full-time obligations to Tesla.”
