Make Iran Great Again
After the U.S. carried out surprise airstrikes on three of Iran’s nuclear facilities, President Donald Trump sparked fresh controversy by suggesting a possible regime change in Iran.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “It’s not politically correct to use the term ‘Regime Change’, but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change???”
This statement stood in sharp contrast to what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had said just a day earlier. Speaking at a Sunday morning press conference, Hegseth clarified, “This mission was not and has not been about regime change.”
Until Trump’s post, senior U.S. officials, including the vice president, defense secretary, top military advisers, and the secretary of state, had maintained a calm and united tone. They suggested the damage to Iran’s military would likely push Tehran back to the negotiating table, avoiding a major escalation.
However, Trump’s bold language has created confusion about the administration’s actual stance. It’s unclear whether the president is just trying to pressure Iran or if he’s seriously considering pushing for a change in Iran’s leadership.
In another post, Trump praised the U.S. military, saying, “The damage to the Nuclear sites in Iran is said to be ‘monumental’. The hits were hard and accurate. Great skill was shown by our military. Thank you!”
These mixed signals come at a tense time in the Middle East, as conflict between Iran and Israel intensifies. While some U.S. leaders are calling for a return to diplomacy, Trump’s latest remarks could make that more difficult and risk adding fuel to an already dangerous situation.
