The Escalator Incident

The controversy began on Tuesday when Trump and First Lady Melania Trump stepped onto an escalator inside the UN building. Moments later, the escalator came to an abrupt halt, forcing the couple to climb the stopped stairway. Trump initially joked about the malfunction during his speech but later described it as a dangerous situation.

“It’s amazing that Melania and I didn’t fall forward onto the sharp edges of these steel steps,” Trump wrote online. “It was only because we were holding the handrail tightly, or it would have been a disaster.”

He labeled the incident “absolutely sabotage,” pointing to a Sunday Times article that claimed some UN staff had previously joked about shutting down escalators to embarrass him.

Teleprompter and Sound Failures

The second issue involved the teleprompter. Trump said the equipment was “bad” and disrupted his delivery during the speech. According to UN spokesperson Farhan Aziz Haq, however, the teleprompter belonged to Trump’s own team, and any problems should be addressed by the White House.
