Trump Says Five Jets Shot Down During India-Pakistan Clashes
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that as many as five fighter jets were brought down during the recent conflict between India and Pakistan, which followed a deadly militant attack in India-administered Kashmir in April. He made the comments during a private dinner with Republican lawmakers at the White House but did not specify whether the aircraft were Indian or Pakistani.
“Planes were being shot out of the sky. I believe five jets were actually taken down—maybe four or five,” Trump said, while discussing the India-Pakistan confrontation. He did not provide more details or evidence.
Following the Kashmir attack that killed 26 people, tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors escalated rapidly. India blamed Pakistan for the attack, an allegation Islamabad denied, urging a neutral probe instead.
In response, on May 7, Indian warplanes struck what it called “terror camps” across the border. This triggered a series of retaliatory attacks involving fighter jets, drones, missiles, and artillery fire over several days, resulting in numerous casualties.
Pakistan later claimed it had downed five Indian jets in aerial combat. India, meanwhile, said it had also destroyed a few Pakistani planes, though Islamabad denied losing any aircraft but admitted that its airbases had been hit.
India’s top military official revealed in late May that the Indian Air Force had changed tactics after losing aircraft early on, eventually gaining an upper hand before the ceasefire was declared.
Trump has repeatedly taken credit for helping broker the May 10 ceasefire, saying his intervention and pressure on both sides helped de-escalate the situation. However, India has rejected the idea that outside involvement played a role, stating that such matters must be resolved bilaterally between New Delhi and Islamabad.
While India is becoming a key strategic partner for the U.S. in Asia, especially to counter China’s influence, Pakistan remains a long-time U.S. ally.
The brief but intense military exchange marked another chapter in the decades-long conflict between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir region.
