Thailand-Cambodia Tensions
Fierce fighting between Thailand and Cambodia entered its second day on Friday, marking the worst border violence between the neighbors in over a decade. Officials report at least 20 people dead and more than 130,000 forced to flee their homes.
Tensions flared despite diplomatic efforts. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet claimed both sides had initially agreed to a ceasefire proposed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently chairs ASEAN. However, Cambodia later accused Thailand of backing out of the deal. Thailand did not issue a formal response.
Thailand’s acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, said Cambodia attacked multiple positions using heavy artillery. Thai officials accused Cambodia of targeting civilians, including schools and hospitals, and condemned these as “barbaric acts” and possible war crimes. Cambodia, in turn, denounced Thailand’s use of cluster munitions, which are banned by international treaties—though Thailand is not a signatory.
Reports indicate fighting has expanded from six to 12 locations, with Thai forces deploying artillery and fighter jets. Cambodia, lacking equivalent air power, has appealed to the UN Security Council for intervention.
Both sides exchanged blame over damage to the historic 11th-century Preah Vihear temple, a long-disputed site near the border. Cambodia said Thai shelling caused visible damage, while Thai military officials denied the claims.
The conflict was sparked after Thailand expelled Cambodia’s ambassador following landmine incidents that injured Thai soldiers. Thailand blamed Cambodia for planting the mines, which Cambodia has denied.
As the violence continues, thousands in border provinces like Surin are taking shelter in makeshift camps. Families described fleeing intense shelling, with many left terrified and homeless.
“We heard loud explosions and ran,” said 67-year-old evacuee Aung Ying Yong. “We’re heartbroken that this war has forced us from our homes.”
