FIR Against X in Kerala Over AI Deepfake Targeting PM Modi, ECI Ahead of Elections

Kerala Cyber Police have registered an FIR against social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and a user over an AI-generated video targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Incident Details
The case was filed on March 25, 2026, at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram. Authorities acted after the circulation of a 1-minute 17-second AI-generated video.
What the Video Shows
According to police, the video allegedly portrays PM Modi and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in a misleading and defamatory manner. It refers to a 2019 incident involving an ECI letter that mistakenly carried the BJP Kerala unit’s seal, suggesting a collusive relationship.
Action Against X and User
Police stated that despite instructions to remove the video, it continued to circulate on the platform. Legal notices have been issued to X. The FIR also names a specific account, Laxmi N Raju (@valiant_Raju), along with others involved.
Legal Charges
The case includes multiple sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, such as public mischief, forgery, and intentional insult. Section 66C of the IT Act, related to identity theft and misuse of digital content like deepfakes, has also been invoked.
Election Context
Officials warned that such content could undermine the credibility of constitutional bodies and affect free and fair elections. The action comes ahead of the Kerala Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, with increased monitoring of online platforms.
