Sundargarh district witnessed severe tension following a violent clash between two groups in the Regent Market area, prompting the administration to impose emergency measures to restore law and order.
The tension reportedly began following a rumour related to alleged beef selling in the Regent Market area, which later escalated into violence and confrontation between the two groups. The situation turned violent, leaving 12 people injured, including 4 police personnel. Following the incident, panic spread in the area, leading to a breakdown of normalcy.
To prevent the spread of misinformation and rumours through social media, the district administration suspended internet services in Sundargarh town until 6 pm today. Additionally, Section 163 has been imposed to restrict public movement and gatherings.
As a precautionary step, all government and private schools and colleges in Sundargarh town and nearby areas have been closed for the day to ensure the safety of students.
According to District Collector Shubhankar Mohapatra, the administration is closely monitoring the situation. A peace committee meeting will be held to defuse tensions and bring both groups to the table. He stated that restrictions will be lifted gradually once the situation becomes completely normal.
Senior officials, including the Western Range DIG, Superintendent of Police, Additional District Magistrate, and Sub-Collector, have reached the affected area and are engaged in restoring calm.
Current Situation
At present, the situation in Sundargarh is under control but tense. Heavy police deployment continues in sensitive areas, and authorities have appealed to citizens not to believe or circulate rumours. Normalcy is expected to return gradually following peace talks and continued monitoring.
