Srinagar, November — A tragic accidental explosion inside the Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar late Friday night killed nine people and injured 32, senior officials confirmed on Saturday. Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat said the blast occurred while a specialised team was extracting samples from a large and “highly unstable” cache of explosives seized recently from Faridabad, Haryana.

He emphasised that the incident was purely accidental, dismissing speculation on social media and television channels about a terror strike targeting the police station. “Any other speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary,” he said.

How the Explosion Happened

According to Prabhat, officers from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), crime photographers, revenue officials, and State Investigation Agency (SIA) personnel were conducting a sampling operation connected to FIR No. 162/2025. The operation involved handling around 360 kg of explosive substances, including ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, sulphur, and chemical reagents.

The explosive cache had been seized on November 9 and 10 from the rented residence of accused Dr Muzzamil Ganaie in Faridabad. The material was linked to a major uncovering of a “white-collar” terror module operating across Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana.

The sampling process had been underway for two days and was being carried out with extreme caution due to the sensitivity of the materials. However, at approximately 11:20 pm on Friday, an accidental detonation occurred, triggering smaller successive blasts that initially hampered rescue efforts.

Casualties and Injuries

Among the nine deceased were three members of the FSL team, two crime scene photographers, two revenue officials, one SIA official, and a tailor associated with the investigation team.

A total of 32 people were injured, including:

  • 27 police personnel

  • 2 revenue officials

  • 3 civilians from nearby residential areas

All injured individuals were shifted to hospitals in Srinagar for treatment.srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed grief over the tragedy. His office wrote on X that the Chief Minister was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries suffered by personnel on duty.

Background of the Case

The explosive materials being examined were part of a major investigation launched after threatening posters targeting police forces surfaced in Bunpora, Nowgam, in mid-October. CCTV analysis led to the arrest of initial suspects — Arif Nisar Dar, Yasir-ul-Ashraf, and Maqsood Ahmad Dar. Their interrogation uncovered a wider network involving former paramedic-turned-Imam Maulvi Irfan Ahmad, who allegedly radicalised several individuals.

Subsequent raids at Al Falah University in Faridabad resulted in the arrest of Dr Muzzamil Ganaie and Dr Shaheen Sayeed and the recovery of the 360 kg chemical cache. Investigators believe a trio of doctors — Ganaie, Umar Nabi (the Red Fort blast car driver), and absconding suspect Muzzaffar Rather — formed the core of the module. The role of another arrested doctor, Adeel Rather, remains under investigation.srinagar

Damage to Infrastructure

The police station building suffered severe damage, while nearby structures were also impacted. Officials said the force of the blast was significant enough to cause widespread structural harm.

The probe into the accidental explosion is underway. srinagar
