Hardik Pandya Faces Complaint Over Alleged Disrespect to National Flag During T20 World Cup Celebration

Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya has landed in controversy after India’s victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. While the team celebrated its historic title win, Pandya’s on-field celebrations have triggered a legal complaint and criticism on social media.
Lawyer Files Complaint Over National Flag
A Pune-based lawyer, Wajid Khan Bidkar, filed a complaint against Pandya at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station.
According to the complaint, Pandya allegedly disrespected the Indian national flag during the victory celebrations. The lawyer claimed that Pandya wrapped the Indian tricolour around his body and continued celebrating on the field, which he said was inappropriate and violated rules related to the dignity of the national flag.
The complaint has been filed under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act. Police officials confirmed that they have received the complaint and are currently reviewing the legal aspects of the case.
The T20 World Cup final took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and authorities said the matter could be transferred there if needed.
Social Media Backlash Over Celebrations
Apart from the legal complaint, Pandya has also faced criticism online over his celebration style. Some social media users criticised his public display of affection with his girlfriend Mahieka Sharma during the celebrations.
A few fans also accused him of holding the trophy for too long while posing for photos after the match.
Key Role in India’s Title Win
Despite the controversy, Pandya played a key role in India’s successful campaign. In the final, India defeated the New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs to lift the trophy.
Pandya is now expected to focus on the upcoming Indian Premier League season, where he will captain Mumbai Indians starting March 28, 2026.
The police are currently examining the complaint, and further action will depend on the findings of their review.
