Russia has completely blocked WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Meta, for allegedly violating local laws. The Kremlin confirmed the decision on Thursday.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the move was taken because WhatsApp failed to comply with Russian legal requirements. He added that the platform showed “unwillingness” to follow local regulations, forcing authorities to take action.
WhatsApp Responds
Earlier, WhatsApp claimed that Russian officials were limiting the app’s features inside the country. The statement came shortly after Telegram founder Pavel Durov accused Moscow of placing restrictions on his platform.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp said Russia is trying to block the app to push citizens toward government-backed messaging services.
Impact on Users
The company said more than 100 million users could lose access to private and secure communication. It warned that blocking encrypted messaging services could weaken user safety and digital privacy.
