Russia-China Naval Drills Amid Trump’s Nuclear Submarine Deployment

Sea of Japan, August 3, 2025 — The Russian Pacific Fleet confirmed Sunday that Russia and China are carrying out joint naval drills, including artillery and anti-submarine exercises, in the Sea of Japan as part of their pre-scheduled “Maritime Interaction-2025” operations.

The maneuvers, involving Russian anti-submarine ships, Chinese destroyers, diesel-electric submarines, and a Chinese submarine rescue vessel, are set to conclude on Tuesday. The exercises aim to enhance interoperability in air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime rescue operations.

The announcement comes just two days after former U.S. President Donald Trump said he had ordered two American nuclear submarines to deploy in “the appropriate regions” in response to provocative statements from former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev about nuclear conflict.

Despite the geopolitical timing, Russian sources emphasized that the drills were planned well before Trump’s declaration. Interfax quoted the Pacific Fleet as saying the exercises reflect growing defense coordination between Moscow and Beijing.

Russia and China, bound by a 2022 “no-limits” strategic partnership, frequently conduct joint military drills as a show of strength and deterrence, especially amid ongoing tensions with the West over the war in Ukraine.

It remains extremely rare for U.S. officials to publicly discuss nuclear submarine deployments, making Trump’s remarks especially significant in the context of escalating U.S.-Russia friction.
