Putin Wants Trump to Recognize Russian Control Over Four Ukrainian Regions

Russian President Vladimir Putin wants U.S. President Donald Trump to officially accept that four regions in Ukraine—Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson—belong to Russia, along with Crimea, which Russia took in 2014.
According to the Russian newspaper Kommersant, Putin brought up this idea during a private meeting with business leaders. Russia has been making progress in the war but does not fully control these four regions. The report says that if the U.S. recognizes these areas as Russian territory soon, Putin would promise not to try to take the Ukrainian city of Odessa or other parts of Ukraine.
When asked about the report, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Putin and Trump did not talk about this during their recent call. However, he confirmed that Putin discussed the Ukraine conflict in a private meeting with Russian business leaders.
