PM Modi Meets Canadian PM Mark Carney at G7 Outreach Summit in Canada

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly received by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney upon his arrival in Canada on Tuesday for the G7 Outreach Summit, held in Kananaskis.

Confirming the meeting, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on social media platform X, saying, “Building bridges for global progress and cooperation. PM @MarkJCarney of Canada welcomed PM @narendramodi at the #G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.”

This marks PM Modi’s first visit to Canada in ten years. He landed in Calgary on Monday morning and is attending the summit from June 16 to 17. The visit comes after the recent Operation Sindoor — India’s precision strike on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi also met with several world leaders, including Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In a statement, the MEA said the Prime Minister will join discussions with G7 nations and other invited countries on key global challenges. The topics include energy security, innovation in technology, the link between artificial intelligence and energy, and developments in quantum technology.

This is PM Modi’s sixth straight appearance at the G7 Summit. In his address, he is expected to speak on global issues and highlight the concerns of the Global South — a term that represents developing nations.

PM Modi also shared a message on social media after reaching Calgary: “Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had invited PM Modi in an effort to repair strained relations between the two nations. Tensions rose last year after then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made accusations against India regarding the killing of a Khalistani separatist. In recent months, officials from both countries have resumed communication, and talks are underway about appointing new High Commissioners.

During his brief stay in Canada — just under 24 hours — PM Modi will attend the main outreach session and hold several important bilateral meetings with global leaders. He will then leave for Zagreb on Wednesday morning (India time) as part of his three-nation tour.

The G7 is a group of the world’s most developed economies, consisting of France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, and Canada, along with the European Union. At the summit, PM Modi will interact with French President Emmanuel Macron, UK PM Keir Starmer, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and host Canadian PM Mark Carney.
