The Indian Army has started Operation SHIVA 2025, a high-level security mission aimed at ensuring the safe and smooth passage of pilgrims during this year’s Shri Amarnath Yatra. Officials confirmed the launch of the annual exercise on Friday.

This year’s security push comes as intelligence reports warn of increased threats from Pakistan-backed terror groups, especially following recent anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

The operation is being carried out in close coordination with civil authorities and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). It focuses on boosting security along both the northern and southern routes taken by pilgrims on their way to the holy Amarnath cave shrine.

According to the Army, more than 8,500 soldiers have been deployed for this year’s yatra. They are backed by a multi-layered security grid, advanced surveillance systems, and emergency response teams.

One of the key features of this operation is a robust anti-drone system. Over 50 counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) and electronic warfare devices have been installed to monitor and neutralize any drone threats. In addition, drones and UAVs are being used to keep constant watch over the pilgrimage routes and the cave shrine, providing live surveillance to detect any danger in advance.

Engineer units are working to maintain and widen roads, build or repair bridges, and prepare for any natural disasters. Medical facilities have also been strengthened with over 150 healthcare workers, nine medical aid posts, two advanced dressing stations, a 100-bed hospital, and 26 oxygen booths filled with two lakh litres of oxygen.

Signal teams are ensuring smooth communication, while bomb squads are on alert. Helicopters are also on standby to handle emergencies like evacuations or medical crises.

Additional preparations include emergency food supplies for more than 25,000 people, the setup of tent shelters, clean drinking water points, bulldozers, and other critical machinery.

High-definition PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras and live drone footage are being used to keep track of vehicle convoys from Jammu to the cave, allowing for quick action in case of any threats.

The Army stated that Operation SHIVA 2025 underlines its dedication to protecting the Amarnath Yatra and making sure that every pilgrim has a safe and uninterrupted spiritual journey.
