Why Odisha Should Lead the Revival of Indian Football Like It Did Hockey The Eastern Times

Odisha has already demonstrated how visionary investment in sports can transform a struggling discipline into a global success story. Under the leadership of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the state sponsored Indian hockey, developed world-class infrastructure, and hosted major international tournaments. These efforts played a significant role in the revival of Indian hockey, with both the men's and women's national teams achieving remarkable success on the world stage.

The Time for Football Has Come

As the FIFA World Cup 2026 captures the attention of billions worldwide, India is once again absent from the tournament. Despite football being the world's most popular sport, India has yet to establish itself as a competitive football nation. This calls for long-term investment, better infrastructure, professional coaching, and strong grassroots development.

Odisha Has Already Started Building Football

Odisha's commitment to football is not just an idea—it has already begun. In 2023, the state inaugurated three state-of-the-art football facilities: the Odisha Football Academy, Bhubaneswar Football Academy, and the Capital Football Arena. Developed at a cost of approximately ₹90 crore, these centres are equipped with modern training infrastructure and are located close to one another, allowing multiple teams to train simultaneously.

The facilities were inaugurated in the presence of Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri and members of the national team, marking a significant milestone in Odisha's football journey.

The centres serve as training bases for the Indian U-16 and U-19 national teams, Odisha FC's men's, women's, and youth teams, as well as Odisha's state teams. The government has also announced a dedicated girls' football academy in Kendrapada, grassroots programmes for children aged 6–12, and regular education programmes for coaches and referees. These initiatives provide a strong foundation on which Odisha can build an even bigger football ecosystem.

India Is a Football-Loving Nation

India may not be competing in the FIFA World Cup, but it is one of the world's largest football-viewing nations. Hundreds of millions of Indians follow the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League, Premier League, La Liga, and other major football competitions every year.

The excitement surrounding Lionel Messi's proposed visit to India also reflected the country's immense passion for football. The overwhelming response from fans proved that India possesses a vibrant football culture waiting to be transformed into sporting success.

Why Odisha Should Lead

Odisha has already built a successful model for sports development. With its proven experience in hockey and its growing investment in football infrastructure, the state has the credibility and institutional capacity to lead Indian football's revival.

By expanding its existing academies, creating more high-performance centres, partnering with leading international football organisations, and strengthening grassroots development, Odisha can become the driving force behind India's football future.

Why It Makes Sense

  • Build on a Proven Model

Odisha has already shown that sustained investment and professional management can revive a sport. Football can benefit from the same long-term vision.

  • Present Odisha on the World Stage

Football is the world's most watched sport. Sponsoring Indian football would showcase Odisha before billions of viewers through international tournaments, television broadcasts, and digital media, strengthening the state's global identity.

  • Strengthen Odisha's Sporting Reputation

Expanding from hockey into football would firmly establish Odisha as India's leading sports destination and attract more international tournaments, partnerships, and investments.

  • Harness India's Football Passion

India's enormous football fan base is one of its greatest strengths. With the right investment, this passion can be converted into player development, stronger domestic leagues, and a competitive national team.

  • Investment in Youth

World-class academies, coaching programmes, and grassroots initiatives will create opportunities for thousands of young footballers while promoting discipline, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles.

  • Build India's Football Future

A sustained commitment over the next decade can improve India's FIFA ranking, strengthen the national team, and increase the country's chances of qualifying for future FIFA World Cups.

A Vision Beyond Football

Odisha's investment in hockey transformed the sport and enhanced the state's global reputation. Its early investment in football has already laid a solid foundation. With continued commitment, Odisha has the opportunity to lead another sporting revolution—one that could reshape Indian football for generations.

Time to Think Bigger, Can Odisha Lead Again?

Odisha has already proved that strategic investment can transform a sport. It has not only revived Indian hockey but has also laid the foundation for football through modern academies and training centres.

The next step is to expand this vision nationally. With its experience, infrastructure, and commitment to sports, Odisha is uniquely positioned to become the driving force behind Indian football's revival.

If sustained investment, grassroots development, and world-class training continue, Odisha could help shape a future where India is no longer just one of the world's biggest football audiences—but also a competitive football nation.

If Odisha could help revive Indian hockey, why can't it become the catalyst for the rise of Indian football?
