Air pollution levels in the Twin City have reached alarming levels, prompting the Odisha government to impose strict restrictions for the next seven days. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Bhubaneswar stood at 397 on January 1, placing it in the severe category. Officials said air quality has remained severe for the past one week.
Pollution levels have also worsened in Cuttack, leading the government to take immediate steps to control the situation.
Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia said that all construction activities will remain suspended from 6 pm to 10 am in the Twin City during this period. The move aims to reduce dust and emissions caused by construction work.
To control road dust, local authorities have been instructed to carry out regular water sprinkling at major roads and busy areas. Officials have also been directed to strictly enforce the restrictions. The air quality situation in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack is being closely monitored, with daily reviews underway.
To address the issue in the long term, the minister has convened a high-level meeting involving scientists, environmental experts, and engineers to identify the causes of pollution and plan permanent solutions.
Meanwhile, steps are also being taken in Balasore to curb rising pollution. The Balasore district administration took action on Wednesday, issuing directions to control dust, regulate construction activities, and strictly implement pollution control norms.
The impact of these seven-day restrictions across different cities will be reviewed in the coming days to assess whether air quality improves and cleaner air is restored for residents.
