Odisha Plans Satellite Launch Centre, Awaits Centre’s Approval

Odisha has proposed setting up a satellite launch centre in the state, with the project currently awaiting approval from the Central Government.

Science and Technology Minister Krushna Chandra Patra said preliminary discussions have already been held with the Centre and that the state government will begin the process once it receives the green signal.

Speaking at the National Space Day celebration organised at the Odisha Space Applications Centre (ORSAC), Patra said Odisha is steadily expanding its capabilities in science and technology. The state is focusing on scientific research, technology-driven projects and encouraging greater interest in science among young students.

The minister said Odisha has formally submitted a proposal to the Centre for establishing the launch facility. During his recent visit to Delhi, he also discussed the proposal with the concerned Union Minister. A decision on the proposal is expected soon, he said.

Odisha Looks to Build Space-Tech Ecosystem

Patra also highlighted the growing contribution of Odisha-based startups to the defence sector, particularly in areas such as drone technology. He said the use of equipment developed by startups from the state in the country's defence system was a matter of pride.

He expressed confidence that Odisha's scientists and technology entrepreneurs would play a larger role in the space and defence sectors in the coming years.

The state is also planning to strengthen its scientific and geospatial infrastructure. According to the minister, Odisha will establish a Science Bhawan, construct a new building for ORSAC and set up a GIS laboratory.

The National Space Day programme was attended by senior officials, scientists, academics and students. Additional Chief Secretary Chitra Arumugam, CSIR Professor Shishir Panda and ORSAC Chief Executive Rashmita Panda also addressed the gathering.

An atlas on groundwater conservation, publications related to the Sustainable Development Goals, the ORSAC apprenticeship portal and an ORSAC project booklet were released during the event. Students who excelled in school-level competitions were felicitated, while an exhibition showcasing scientific and technological initiatives was also organised.

Several startups were honoured during the programme, highlighting Odisha's growing focus on space technology, geospatial applications, scientific research and innovation.
