Odisha Becomes India’s Fourth Most Expensive State as Inflation Hits 5.15% The Eastern Times

Odisha recorded the fourth-highest retail inflation rate in India in June, as rising prices increased the cost of living for households across the state.

According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Odisha’s retail inflation rose to 5.15% in June, significantly higher than the national average of 4.38%.

Only Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu recorded higher retail inflation rates than Odisha during the month.

Odisha’s Retail Inflation Rises from 4.54% to 5.15%

Odisha’s retail inflation increased from 4.54% in May to 5.15% in June, indicating a noticeable rise in the cost of goods and services within a month.

The increase in prices of various commodities forced households to spend more on their regular needs, adding pressure to monthly budgets.

Among the states listed in the report, Telangana recorded the highest retail inflation at 6.36%, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 5.38% and Tamil Nadu at 5.24%. Odisha ranked fourth at 5.15%, while Madhya Pradesh recorded 5.09%.

Rural Odisha Faces Greater Inflation Pressure

The impact of rising prices was more pronounced in rural Odisha than in urban areas.

Retail inflation in the state’s rural areas stood at 5.40% in June, compared with 4.47% in urban areas.

In May, rural and urban inflation rates in Odisha were 4.83% and 3.94%, respectively. This means inflation increased in both rural and urban areas during June.

Higher rural inflation indicates that people living in villages faced greater pressure from rising prices. Changes in the prices of agricultural and essential commodities can have a significant impact on household expenditure in rural areas.

Odisha’s Food Inflation Reaches 6.40%

Odisha also recorded the fourth-highest combined food inflation rate in the country at 6.40%.

Among the states listed, Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest food inflation at 8.18%, followed by Telangana at 7.29% and Tamil Nadu at 7.08%.

Odisha followed with a food inflation rate of 6.40%, while Madhya Pradesh recorded 4.94%.

What Is Retail Inflation and How Does It Affect Common People?

Retail inflation refers to the rise in the prices of goods and services that people regularly buy, such as food, clothing, fuel, transport and housing. It is mainly measured through the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

When retail inflation rises, people have to spend more money to buy the same goods and services. This reduces their purchasing power and puts pressure on household budgets. Low- and middle-income families are usually affected the most, as a larger share of their income is spent on daily necessities.

National Retail Inflation Stands at 4.38%

At the national level, retail inflation stood at 4.38% in June, above the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% inflation target.

The rise in inflation reflects changing prices across different categories of goods and services, affecting household expenditure across the country.

Some Items Become Cheaper, Others Turn Costlier

During the month, prices of several items declined. These included potatoes, cars and jeeps, cumin, motorcycles and scooters.

However, consumers had to pay more for several other products. Prices increased for silver jewellery, ginger, gold, diamond and platinum jewellery, tomatoes and raisins.

State-Wise Retail and Food Inflation

State Retail Inflation Food Inflation
Telangana 6.36% 7.29%
Andhra Pradesh 5.38% 8.18%
Tamil Nadu 5.24% 7.08%
Odisha 5.15% 6.40%
Madhya Pradesh 5.09% 4.94%

The figures show that inflationary pressure remained relatively high in Odisha, particularly in rural areas, increasing the cost burden on households across the state.
