To improve waste management and cleanliness in the city, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to collect a monthly user fee for garbage collection from residents and commercial establishments starting this month.
There are about 3.18 lakh households in the BMC area. Through this move, the civic body aims to collect over ₹10 crore every month, said Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das.
Why the User Fee Is Being Introduced
The Mayor said the decision is in line with Swachh Survekshan guidelines. The user fee will help:
Ensure daily door-to-door garbage collection
Improve waste segregation at source
Make transportation and processing of waste easier
Strengthen the city’s overall cleanliness system
She added that Bhubaneswar has already improved its cleanliness ranking significantly and now aims to be among the top three cleanest cities in India, with public support.
