Bhubaneswar : The Government of Odisha has proposed a major correction of English spellings for several district and place names to better reflect their original Odia pronunciation and cultural roots.
The proposal was announced through a public notice issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department on February 4, 2026.
What Is the Proposal About?
The state government plans to correct English transliterations that it says have been inaccurately used for decades.
Officials clarified that:
This is not renaming
It is a correction of distorted English spellings
The goal is to align official records with authentic Odia names
District Names Proposed for Correction
The notice lists changes to 7 districts, including:
Balasore → Baleshwar
Khurda → Khoradha
Keonjhar → Kendujhar
Deogarh → Debagarh
Angul → Anugol
Kendrapara → Kendrapada
Nayagarh → Nayagada

Other Place Names Also Included
Apart from districts, 24 subdivisions, tehsils, and blocks are proposed for spelling correction.
Some examples:
Athagarh (Cuttack) → Athagad
Jatni (Khurda) → Jatani

Public Feedback Invited
The government has invited objections and suggestions from citizens.

This move follows Odisha’s landmark 2011 decision when:
“Orissa” became “Odisha”
“Oriya” became “Odia”
The current proposal continues that effort to preserve and protect the state’s linguistic and cultural identity.
