Manikapatna Curd from Odisha Moves Closer to GI Tag Recognition

Bhubaneswar: The traditional Manikapatna curd (dahi) from Puri district may soon receive a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which would officially recognise its unique origin and traditional preparation methods.
GI Application in Final Stage
The Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) is preparing the GI application for Manikapatna curd. According to OUAT Vice-Chancellor Pravat Kumar Roul, the draft application is now in its final stage.
He said that all historical data and documents related to the curd have already been compiled, and the application will soon move forward for approval.
If the GI tag is granted, it will protect the product’s name from imitation and could increase its recognition and market value.
A Delicacy Linked to Lord Jagannath
Manikapatna curd is closely connected to a well-known story associated with Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra.
According to mythology, during the Kanchi Abhijan, while going to war, the two deities were offered curd by a milkmaid named Manika Gauduni. This event is believed to have taken place in Manikapatna, a village located in the Brahmagiri block of Puri district in Odisha.
The story has given the curd a special religious and cultural significance in the region.
What Makes Manikapatna Curd Unique
The curd is known for its rich, creamy texture and distinct tangy flavour. Its unique taste comes from traditional preparation methods that have been followed in the region for generations.
It is prepared using milk from indigenous buffaloes raised in the Krishnaprasad and Brahmagiri areas of Puri district, which gives the curd its characteristic quality.
The curd is also valued for its natural probiotic properties, which help support digestion.
Odisha’s Well-Known GI Products
At present, Odisha has 27 GI-tagged products, highlighting the state’s rich cultural and agricultural heritage. Some well-known GI products from Odisha include:
- Odisha Rasagola
- Pattachitra paintings
- Konark stone carving
- Kapdaganda Shawl
- Koraput Kalajeera rice
- Similipal Kai Chutney
- Nayagarh Kanteimundi Brinjal
Boost for Local Farmers and Tradition
Experts say the GI tag will help preserve traditional dairy practices, protect local identity, and support rural producers.
It could also increase demand for Manikapatna curd and bring greater recognition to Odisha’s traditional food heritage, benefiting the local economy.
