Mother Tongue Mandatory Till Class 5, New Textbooks from 2026–27: Dharmendra Pradhan

The Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, has announced that teaching in the mother tongue will be made compulsory up to Class 5 as part of major reforms in school education.

Reviewing the development of curriculum and textbooks, the Minister said that from the academic session 2026–27, new textbooks will be introduced for Classes 1 to 8, based on the Odisha State Curriculum Framework.

To ensure smooth implementation, around 1.67 lakh teachers across the state will be trained under the new curriculum. The move aims to strengthen foundational learning and improve conceptual understanding among students.

Pradhan further stated that a 10-day bag-free learning programme will be introduced for students from Classes 6 to 10 to promote activity-based and practical education.

The state government will also give special focus to children’s nutrition and health from birth to Class 12. Under the National Education Policy 2020, 55 new NCERT textbooks have already been translated.

In addition, new textbooks have been developed for three subjects in Odisha—Art Education, Physical Education and Wellness, and Vocational Education— to support the holistic development of students.
