Bhubaneswar: A major fire broke out late Monday night in the capital city. More than 50 shops at Unit-1 Market were completely destroyed. The loss is estimated to be in crores of rupees.

More than eight fire engines and many firefighters rushed to the spot. However, the fire was very strong and could not be controlled quickly. Even after continuous water spraying, the flames did not reduce, and local people became scared.

The fire was finally brought under control with the help of a firefighting robot. Fire engines kept bringing water again and again. Several big trees in the area were also burnt.

The fire started around 1:30 am from a shop near the Capital Police Station and quickly spread to nearby shops. The shops had highly flammable items like tarpaulin, plastic ropes and bamboo mats. Gas cylinders inside the shops also exploded, making the situation worse.

Firefighters worked for more than one hour to control the blaze. The fire was fully controlled at around 2:36 am. Electricity in nearby areas was cut off for safety.
The exact cause of the fire is not yet known. A short circuit or some other reason is suspected.
