US – Iran Nuclear Talk

Iran and the United States will meet in Oman on Saturday, April 12, 2025, to talk about Iran’s growing nuclear program. U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that he might use military force if no agreement is reached. Iran is cautious and doesn’t fully trust Trump, who has often threatened to attack if Iran doesn’t stop its nuclear work.

Both sides hope for some progress, but they disagree a lot. The talks, which started more than 20 years ago, might be face-to-face as Trump wants or indirect as Iran prefers—they haven’t decided yet. Success could ease tensions in the Middle East, where wars in Gaza and Lebanon, missile attacks between Iran and Israel, Houthi attacks on Red Sea ships, and Syria’s recent government change have caused trouble since 2023. But if the talks fail, it could lead to bigger conflicts in a region that supplies much of the world’s oil. Iran has warned neighbors with U.S. bases that they’ll face trouble if they help in any attack.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has given Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi full power to lead the talks. Araqchi will represent Iran, while Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, will lead the U.S. side. An Iranian official said the talk time will depend on how serious and friendly the U.S. is, but it will only focus on the nuclear issue. Iran won’t discuss its missile program

 Decades-Long Dispute

Iran says its nuclear program is only for peaceful energy, but Western countries think it’s trying to make a nuclear bomb. They worry because Iran has enriched uranium to a level close to what’s needed for weapons, far beyond what’s needed for civilian use. Trump restarted a tough policy against Iran in February, pulling out of a 2015 deal with six world powers in 2018 and adding harsh sanctions. Since then, Iran’s nuclear work has grown, including enriching uranium to 60%—near bomb-making levels.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio hopes the talks bring peace and says Iran will never get a nuclear weapon. Iran calls this a “genuine chance” despite U.S. threats. Israel, a U.S. ally, sees Iran’s nuclear program as a big danger and might attack if talks fail. Iran’s influence in the Middle East has weakened, with its allies like Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Shi’ite groups in Iraq and Syria struggling since the Gaza conflict and Syria’s leadership change.
