Iran to Hold Nuclear Talks With Europe in Rome Ahead of U.S. Meeting
Iran will meet with Britain, France, and Germany in Rome on Friday to discuss its nuclear program and ease tensions, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Wednesday. These talks will take place just before a separate round of negotiations between Iran and the United States, also scheduled in Italy later this weekend.
Araqchi criticized the three European countries, known as the E3, saying they had lost influence in nuclear discussions due to their past policies. “We don’t want this situation to continue and are open to dialogue,” he told Iranian state media.
Tehran proposed the meeting earlier this week, and the E3 have confirmed their participation. These countries are part of the 2015 nuclear agreement, which was abandoned by former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2018. Since then, Iran has exceeded limits set by the deal, raising concerns in the West about the possibility of nuclear weapons development. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful.
Tensions are rising ahead of a key United Nations Security Council resolution related to the 2015 deal, set to expire in October. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot warned that France is prepared to reimpose international sanctions if no new agreement is reached. He stated these sanctions would severely impact Iran’s economy by cutting off access to global markets and technology.
In response, Iran’s representative to the U.N. said, “If France and its allies want a diplomatic solution, they must stop making threats.”
Adding to the pressure, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed new sanctions on Tuesday targeting a network in Iran and China accused of helping supply missile materials to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Araqchi criticized the timing of the U.S. sanctions, saying they send “the wrong message” during sensitive negotiations.
Despite the rising tensions, Trump has expressed confidence that a new agreement can still be reached to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
