Indian Army Responds to Pakistan Firing After Pahalgam
The Pakistan Army fired without provocation along the International Border (IB) in Jammu district on Wednesday. This comes after six days of repeated ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC).
A spokesperson from the Defence Ministry said that Pakistani soldiers used small arms to fire across the LoC in Baramulla and Kupwara districts, as well as the IB in the Pargwal Sector, during the night of April 29–30.
“The Indian Army gave a suitable response,” the spokesperson added.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have been growing since the deadly terror attack on April 22 in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam. In that attack, 26 civilians were killed, including 25 tourists and one local resident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the attack by promising that the terrorists, along with those who support them, will be hunted down.
On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with the Prime Minister for 40 minutes. Before the meeting, he was briefed by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on the army’s readiness to deal with any threats.
In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha held a security review meeting with Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi. Sinha told the Army to take strong action to catch those behind the Pahalgam attack.
Security forces have stepped up operations across the region. They have been demolishing the homes of terrorists and their supporters to send a strong warning to militant groups. Last Friday, the houses of two terrorists—Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh—who were involved in the Pahalgam attack, were demolished in Tral and Bijbehara. So far, 10 houses belonging to active terrorists have been destroyed in the Kashmir Valley.
On Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack and passed a resolution against the violence.
