Modi-Musk Talk
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone call with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. They talked about many things, including how they can work together on technology and innovation.
PM Modi shared on X, “I spoke with Elon Musk about various topics we discussed during our meeting in Washington DC earlier this year. We talked about the big potential for working together in technology and innovation. India is committed to strengthening our partnership with the US in these areas.”
Modi had met Musk in Washington in February. After that meeting, he posted on X, “I had a great meeting with Elon Musk in Washington DC. We talked about things he cares about, like space, mobility, technology, and innovation. I also shared India’s efforts to improve with ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance.’”
Modi also posted fun moments with Musk’s children, saying, “It was nice to meet Mr. Elon Musk’s family and talk about many things!”
This latest call happens as Tesla plans to start business in India. It also comes when India and the US are negotiating a trade deal. On Wednesday, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met Starlink executives, including Vice President Chad Gibbs and Senior Director Ryan Goodnight, in Delhi. They discussed Starlink’s advanced technology, current partnerships, and future investment plans in India.
This meeting follows reports that Indian telecom companies like Airtel are talking with U.S. firms about starting satellite telecom services. Vodafone Idea is also discussing with Starlink to offer satellite communication in India.
Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said satellite internet is important, especially for rural and remote areas where fiber or mobile signals don’t reach. He explained that these services will help cover every part of India and work alongside fiber and mobile networks, not compete with them. He added that satellite communication can be vital during emergencies when disasters damage telecom towers and cables.
Starlink, owned by Musk’s SpaceX, is still waiting for a license to operate in India because of new government rules on spectrum pricing. Scindia said any company can apply for a license if it follows Indian laws.
Starlink is a satellite internet service aiming to provide fast internet globally. SpaceX, its parent company, is the first private company to send astronauts to and from the International Space Station and has also done an all-civilian space mission.
