India has strengthened its military presence in the North-East.
A 4.2-kilometre Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) has been developed in Assam’s Moran region. This new airstrip will allow the Indian Air Force (IAF) to land and operate fighter jets and heavy aircraft during emergencies.
This is not just another stretch of highway. It is a major strategic move.
What Is Special About This Airstrip?
At first glance, it looks like a normal road. But it is built with special military design and strength.
If main airbases are attacked during a conflict, fighter jets can use this emergency strip to land, refuel, and take off again. This ensures that India’s air power remains active even during high-risk situations.
The North-East is considered a sensitive region because of its proximity to the China border. That makes this facility extremely important.

Which Aircraft Can Use It?
The Moran emergency strip can handle some of India’s most powerful aircraft:
Dassault Rafale – India’s advanced fighter jet for air superiority.
Sukhoi Su-30MKI – A powerful multi-role combat aircraft.
Lockheed C-130J Super Hercules – Heavy transport aircraft used to move troops and equipment quickly.
This means both combat missions and emergency troop deployments can happen without delay.
The Doklam Lesson: Speed Matters
During the Doklam standoff, India learned a key lesson — fast response is critical in border tensions.
Now, with highway airstrips like Moran, the Indian military can move reinforcements and heavy weapons much faster.
The focus is no longer just defense. It is about quick mobility and proactive readiness.
Stronger Shield in the East
The Moran ELF works alongside the Hasimara Air Force Station, which houses India’s second Rafale squadron.
Together, they create a stronger defense network in the eastern sector.
This development:
Reduces response time in emergencies
Increases operational flexibility
Sends a clear signal of preparedness
As regional tensions continue to evolve, infrastructure like this ensures India remains ready for any situation.
