Greece Shuts Down in Nationwide Strike Over Low Wages

Greece

Greece came to a stop on Wednesday as workers across the country went on strike. Ferries stayed in port, flights were canceled, and buses and trains only ran for part of the day. The strike was led by Greece’s biggest labor unions, who want better pay and workers’ rights.

Why Are People Striking?

  1. Workers want higher wages to keep up with the rising cost of living (food, rent, electricity).

  2. Unions demand the return of collective wage bargaining, a system where workers negotiate their pay and benefits as a group.

  3. This right was taken away during Greece’s 2009–2018 financial crisis in exchange for international bailout money.

Even though Greece’s economy is doing better now, with the government raising the minimum wage to 880 euros ($970) per month, many families still find it hard to pay for food, electricity, and housing. Union leaders say prices are so high that people are buying 10% less than they did in 2019.

“We just want fair wages and to bring back contracts that protect workers,” said Yiorgos Christopoulos from one of the unions. “Right now, workers have to make deals on their own with employers, and that’s not fair.”

where the strike going on

In the capital city, Athens, large groups of protesters gathered. Public transport like buses, trains, and subways only ran for a few hours. Flights inside the country and to other places were also stopped for 24 hours.

The unions say the strike is about basic needs: “We’re striking for something simple—higher pay and fair work contracts now!”
