Why It Matters

Drug smugglers are increasingly using anonymous websites, encrypted apps, and digital currencies to hide their activities and move money without detection.

Replying in writing, Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, said the new task force will focus on:

  • Tracking darknet drug platforms

  • Monitoring cryptocurrency-linked drug payments

  • Sharing intelligence between agencies

  • Identifying new smuggling methods and routes

What Has Changed

Coordination has been strengthened between the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), State Anti-Narcotics Task Forces, and border guarding forces.

Joint Coordination Committees have also been set up at central and state levels to closely monitor investigations related to major drug seizures.

The NCB is carrying out joint operations with agencies such as the Navy, Coast Guard, Border Security Force, and state police.

What’s Next

The government has also launched NIDAAN, a national digital database of arrested drug offenders.
The platform stores:

  • Identity details

  • Photographs and fingerprints

  • Case and court-related information

Authorities say better data sharing and digital surveillance will help break organised drug networks that operate across states and borders using modern technology.
