Europe on Alert: France Prepares Hospitals for Possible Major Conflict by 2026
Europe is facing growing fears of a potential large-scale conflict, with rising tensions between Russia and NATO nations. In response, France has begun preparing its healthcare system for the possibility of treating thousands of wounded soldiers by 2026.
France’s Hospital Preparedness Plan
A letter issued by the French Ministry of Health on July 18 directed regional health authorities to get ready for a “major engagement.” Hospitals have been asked to prepare to care for both French and foreign soldiers, with scenarios ranging from 10 to 180 days of conflict. The ministry also suggested setting up medical centres near airports, train stations, and ports to help transport foreign soldiers back to their home countries.
Health Minister Catherine Vautrin defended the move, saying it is “normal for a country to anticipate crises and their consequences.” She recalled the nation’s lack of readiness during the Covid-19 pandemic and stressed that this step is part of strategic planning.
Survival Guides and Defence Spending
France has also introduced a 20-page “survival guide,” listing 63 measures to help citizens during wars, natural disasters, or emergencies. The guide recommends stocking up on essentials like food, water, batteries, and first aid kits. While the government says it is a general preparedness measure, it also includes advice on handling nuclear attacks and joining local defence groups.
These steps come alongside France’s decision to raise its defence spending from 2% to 3–3.5% of its GDP, reflecting concerns over the volatile international situation.
