Julius Baer Plans India Expansion as Ultra-Wealthy Population Surges The Eastern Times

Julius Baer has expressed its key priorities in India in 2027 and the first half of 2028. The major Swiss wealth management firm’s long-established franchise in the South Asian country relayed its intent to broaden its presence amid the private wealth market’s continuous growth and increased distribution nationwide.

Ashwin Patni, Head of Wealth Management Solutions at Julius Baer India, remarked that he expects a larger domestic investment market. Mr. Patni supervises investment specialists, investment advisers, and counsellors supporting the bank’s clients. He is also responsible for the advisory proposition and products placed on the Julius Baer India platform.

India’s Growing Wealthy Population Leads to More Demand for Wealth Management Solutions

Mr. Patni described India as a massive growth market where wealth is becoming more distributed. Julius Baer India’s wealth management executive said that it is opportune to expand the group’s presence in the country due to the rapid surge in the number of ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) families.

This trend is partly due to economic growth. These families, at the wealth market’s upper spectrum, have businesses in numerous territories, intend to set up shop in another financial centre, or have children based abroad.

Many of them require management of their investments and business ownership across jurisdictions and generations. Additionally, Mr. Patni pointed out that private equity markets and initial public offerings, or IPOs, are permitting business owners to convert their commercial holdings into investable wealth. New liquidity gets created, including outside India’s largest cities.

India’s larger investment market is the second reason why Julius Baer has intended to expand the locations it serves. According to Mr. Patni, Indian portfolios were concentrated in listed equities and bonds in the past. He added that the product opportunity was also much smaller a decade or 15 years ago.

Today, investment advisers have more alternatives, managed strategies, and private market investments with which to grow an asset allocation, per Mr. Patni. He cited that the market has developed and Julius Baer’s investment team can now design more personalized investment portfolios for their clients.

Hiring Wealth Management Professionals Is Ongoing

As Julius Baer extends its operations across India in the next 12 to 18 months, while more wealth is created in large urban areas, Mr. Patni said their group has been recruiting qualified staffers outside the biggest metropolitan hubs.

He confirmed the need for relationship managers and investment specialists with the appropriate proficiencies, backed by technology and a proper comprehension of Julius Baer’s offerings.

Julius Baer’s 30-Year Operations in India: Growing Further and Getting Stronger

Julius Baer’s India franchise started as DSP Merrill Lynch Limited in 1996. Merrill Lynch acquired a 29.41% equity stake, which it later increased to 40%.

The American financial services firm also established DSP Merrill Lynch Asset Management (India) Limited, which then became a section of Bank of America Merrill Lynch. This unit was transferred to Julius Baer following the Swiss financial company’s agreement to acquire Merrill Lynch’s International Wealth Management business outside the United States.

In 2015, this India transfer was completed, although Mr. Patni shared that Julius Baer India’s local team and platform have been largely uninterrupted by changes in management.

For nearly 30 years, Julius Baer’s operation of an onshore India franchise has combined global investment capabilities and platform with India-based relationship teams.

Clients consist of senior corporate executives, UHNW families, and business owners. They can avail of various solutions related to their investments, wealth planning, and structuring needs.

Today, Julius Baer serves customers from offices across several cities in India, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. The bank is also present in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune.

Julius Baer’s hub-and-spoke business model enables its investment specialists to mix proximity with efficiency. Hence, clients enjoy expertise and services that are accessible regardless of their location.

Moreover, the bank is organized in a way that guarantees clients total national coverage. Therefore, investment specialists can seamlessly assist clients across India.
